Il était déjà déjà en liberté conditionnelle, apres 18 mois de détention, ayant perdu son immunité diplomatique. Anarchists residing in the Kouvelou Mansion squat in Maroussi, north of Athens, have claimed responsibility for an assault on Saturday on Golden Dawn MP Giorgos Germenis.
In a statement posted online, the anarchists said they happened upon Germenis by chance in a café in Maroussi and that tensions escalated when it transpired that the neonazi MP had a gun on him and apparently went to reach for it.
In the statement, the anarchists said they approached Germenis chanting anti-fascist slogans and calling on him and his companions to leave the café. He refused and made to pull out a gun from behind his back, they said, prompting the attack.
Condemning fascists for playing the role of “stooge” and “crutch to the system,” the anarchists called on “all those who are oppressed, locals and migrants, to clear away anything which stands in front of them and blocks the way for a more equal, just, humane society.”
Germenis was briefly hospitalized following the attack on Saturday by a group of about 30 people.

Le député du parti néonazi grec Aube dorée, Yorgos Germenis, a été hospitalisé samedi avec des blessures légères après avoir été frappé à la tête par des inconnus dans la banlieue nord d’Athènes, a-t-on appris de source policière.
Alors qu’il était assis avec deux autres personnes dans une cafeteria à Maroussi, une trentaine de personnes l’ont approché et l’ont frappé à la tête avec des planches de bois, selon la police. Les inconnus lui ont également jeté aux yeux du gaz poivré avant de prendre la fuite, selon la même source. Aucune arrestation n’a eu lieu dans l’immédiat mais la police poursuivait ses recherches.
Yorgos Germenis est jugé actuellement par une cour spéciale d’Athènes pour le crime d’appartenance “à une organisation criminelle”, avec plus d’une dizaine de députés ou ex-députés d’Aube dorée dont leur chef Nikos Michaloliakos. Ils avaient tous été arrêtés et placés en détention provisoire après l’assassinat en septembre 2013 d’un musicien antifasciste par un membre du parti près d’Athènes. En printemps 2015, après l’expiration du délai maximum de détention provisoire de 18 mois, prévu par la loi grecque, Yorgos Germenis et ses co-accusés ont été placé en liberté conditionnelle. Leur procès, entamé il y a plus d’un an, est toujours en cours.

Golden Dawn deputy Giorgos Germenis was attacked by a group of about 30 people outside a cafeteria in the northern Athens suburb of Maroussi on Saturday.
An off-duty policeman who was with the MP of the neonazi party was also beaten, though a woman who was accompanying them was unharmed.
The attack is said to have occurred around lunchtime, when Germenis was set upon outside the cafeteria by the group.
He was punched and kicked, and also assaulted with pepper spray.
The MP had his injuries seen to at a hospital and was released a few hours later.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek police say that a lawmaker with the extreme right Golden Dawn party has been briefly hospitalized after being set upon by a group of people, possibly anarchists, who hit him with an iron bar and sprayed him with pepper spray.
Police say that Giorgos Germenis was sitting at a cafe in a northern Athens suburb when he was attacked on Saturday. He was given first aid at a nearby pharmacy and then went to a hospital to be examined.
Germenis has released a video where he claims he resisted about 30 individuals and caused them to flee. In the video, his face appears slightly bruised, with no major injuries.
Before he was elected, in 2012, Germenis was known as a bassist in a Greek-Norwegian black metal band.
